June 21 is the new "early July"
Big news! The official date of when Spain will (partially) re-open its borders is known. Where we expected two weeks ago that as a resident of Belgium or the Netherlands it would be possible to travel to Spain no earlier than 'early July', we can now already book our flight tickets with a departure date of 21 June.
EU countries will have to wait until 1 July to travel to Spain again, since 1 July is the date when the external borders will open across the European Union. The borders with Spain's neighbor Portugal will also remain closed until June 30, at the request of the Portuguese government.
On 21 June, the state of emergency and the de-escalation process will also end in Spain, which roughly means that tourism will resume its 'normal' course: the mandatory 14-day home quarantine for travelers from abroad will be canceled. Wearing face masks and enforcing the rules on social distancing are of course still mandatory. It is also the case that travelers who enter Spain via airports or ports will be monitored by thermal cameras.
